About the Steps to Calories Calculator

Step counters tell you how many steps you took but not what they were worth. This calculator turns a step count into distance, time and calories. Stride length is estimated from your height (about 41% of height for walking), which gives the distance; your chosen pace gives the time; and your weight combined with the MET value for that pace gives the energy burned.

For an average adult, 10,000 steps is roughly 7 to 8 km (4.5 to 5 miles), takes about 90 minutes of accumulated walking and burns 300 to 400 kcal. Heavier people and faster walkers burn more per step. The 10,000 figure itself began as a marketing slogan, but research supports meaningful health benefits from around 7,000 steps a day upwards.

How to use the Steps to Calories Calculator

  1. Enter your step count for the day (or any period) and pick the pace that best describes your walking.
  2. Enter your height and weight in metric or imperial units.
  3. Read the calories burned, distance in km and miles, and the time spent walking.

Frequently asked questions

How many calories does 10,000 steps burn?

Typically 300 to 400 kcal for a 60 to 80 kg adult walking at a moderate pace. A 100 kg person burns closer to 500 kcal for the same steps.

How many steps are in a mile?

About 2,000 to 2,500 for adults, depending on height and pace. Taller people and faster walkers take fewer, longer steps per mile.

Is the stride estimate accurate?

The 0.414 × height rule is a reasonable average for walking. If you know your actual stride (measure 10 steps and divide), your fitness app may let you set it for better distance accuracy.

Do steps from running count differently?

Yes. Running strides are longer and each step burns more energy. This tool is calibrated for walking; use the Running Pace Calculator and Calorie Burn Converter for running.
