About the Calorie Burn Converter

It is easy to eat 300 calories in a minute and surprisingly hard to burn them. This converter turns any food into exercise time so you can see the trade-off at a glance: a slice of pizza, a can of soda or a whole burger meal expressed as minutes of walking, running, cycling, swimming or burpees for someone of your weight.

The maths uses MET values (metabolic equivalents) from the Compendium of Physical Activities. Calories per minute = MET × 3.5 × weight in kg ÷ 200. Running at 6 mph is about 9.8 METs, brisk walking 4.3, and a set of burpees roughly 8, so a 70 kg person burns about 12 kcal per minute running and 5 kcal per minute walking.

The goal is perspective, not guilt. Food fuels activity, and a treat is fine; the numbers simply show why "I will burn it off later" rarely balances a large portion.

How to use the Calorie Burn Converter

  1. Pick a food or drink, or enter a custom calorie count, and the quantity.
  2. Enter your body weight, which determines how many calories each activity burns.
  3. Choose your main activity and read the minutes required; the table compares all activities.

Frequently asked questions

What is a MET?

A metabolic equivalent is the ratio of energy used during an activity to energy used at rest. Sitting quietly is 1 MET; running at 6 mph is about 9.8 METs, meaning you burn almost ten times your resting rate.

Why does weight change the result?

Moving a heavier body takes more energy, so calories burned per minute scale with body weight. A 90 kg person burns roughly 30% more than a 70 kg person doing the same activity.

How many calories does one burpee burn?

Roughly 1 calorie for an average adult, or about 10 calories per minute at a steady pace of 10 burpees per minute. Intensity and rest between reps change this a lot.

Are the food calorie values exact?

They are typical values for common portions. Real products vary, so use the custom option with the number printed on the label for accuracy.
