About the BMI Calculator
Body mass index (BMI) is a simple screening number that relates your weight to your height: BMI = weight (kg) ÷ height (m)². Health organisations such as the WHO use it to group adults into underweight, normal, overweight and obesity categories, because on a population level higher BMI correlates with higher risk of heart disease, type 2 diabetes and other conditions.
This calculator accepts metric or imperial units, shows your category, and also tells you the weight range that corresponds to a "normal" BMI for your height, together with how much you would need to gain or lose to reach it.
BMI has real limitations. It does not distinguish muscle from fat, so athletes can score "overweight" while being lean, and it does not account for age, sex, ethnicity or where fat is stored. Treat it as one indicator among many, not a diagnosis.
