About the Word Counter

The Word Counter gives you a live count of words, characters, sentences and paragraphs while you write. It is useful for essays and assignments with a word limit, blog posts and SEO content, social media updates with character caps, cover letters, speeches, and any other text where length matters.

Beyond raw counts, the tool estimates how long the text takes to read silently or to speak aloud, and lists the most frequently used words so you can spot repetition. Everything is computed locally in your browser, which keeps your writing private and makes the counts update instantly, even for very long documents.

Frequently asked questions

How are words counted?

A word is any run of letters, numbers or symbols separated by spaces or line breaks. Hyphenated words such as "well-known" count as one word, which matches how most word processors count.

Does the character count include spaces?

Two counts are shown: characters including spaces and characters excluding spaces. Social networks like X (Twitter) and most form limits count spaces, so use the "with spaces" number for those.

How is reading time estimated?

Reading time assumes an average adult reading speed of 225 words per minute. Speaking time assumes 150 words per minute, which is a typical pace for a presentation.

Is my text stored anywhere?

No. Counting happens entirely in your browser. The text is never sent to a server and disappears when you leave the page.
