About the Ideal Weight Calculator

The idea of an ideal body weight comes from clinical medicine, where formulas such as Devine were originally created to calculate drug doses rather than to set personal targets. Four of those formulas are shown here side by side, together with the weight range that corresponds to a healthy body mass index of 18.5 to 24.9 for your height, which is the measure most health services actually use.

Expect the formulas to disagree by several kilograms, because each was fitted to a different population. None of them knows anything about your build or your muscle mass, so a lean, muscular person often sits above the range and is perfectly healthy. Treat the numbers as a rough target zone and pay more attention to waist measurement, fitness and how your weight is changing over time.

Frequently asked questions

Which ideal weight formula is best?

None is definitive. Devine is the most widely used in clinical settings, Robinson and Miller tend to be a little more generous, and Hamwi is the oldest. The healthy BMI range is the most useful guide for most people.

Why does the calculation depend on sex?

The original formulas were fitted separately for men and women because average body composition differs, with women typically carrying a higher proportion of body fat at the same height.

Does this work for athletes?

Not well. Muscle is denser than fat, so trained athletes often exceed both the formula weight and the healthy BMI band while carrying very little fat. A body fat estimate is more informative in that case.

What about children and older adults?

These formulas are for adults. Children are assessed with growth charts and percentiles, and slightly higher weights are often protective in older age, so use clinical guidance rather than a formula.
