About the GPA Calculator

A grade point average is a credit-weighted mean, not a simple average of your letter grades. Each grade is converted to points on the 4.0 scale, multiplied by the credit hours of that course, and the total is divided by the total credits taken. A B in a four-credit lab therefore pulls harder than an A in a one-credit seminar, which is exactly why the arithmetic is worth doing properly.

Scales vary between institutions. Most American universities cap an A+ at 4.0 while some award 4.3, a few use plus and minus grades only for some ranges, and weighted high-school GPAs add a point for AP or IB courses. Set the A+ option to match your school, and remember that a cumulative GPA across several semesters is the same calculation applied to every course you have taken.

Frequently asked questions

How is GPA calculated?

Multiply each course grade point by its credit hours, add those products, then divide by the total credit hours. Three credits of A (4.0) and three of B (3.0) give (12 + 9) / 6 = 3.5.

What is a good GPA?

Above 3.5 is generally considered strong, 3.0 is a solid B average, and many graduate programmes and scholarships set a 3.0 minimum. Employers rarely ask once you have work experience.

How do I calculate my cumulative GPA?

Use the same method across every semester: total grade points from all courses divided by total credits from all courses. You cannot simply average your semester GPAs unless each semester had the same number of credits.

What about pass or fail courses?

Pass or fail courses normally earn credit but carry no grade points, so they are excluded from the GPA calculation entirely. Leave those rows at zero credits here.
