About the Dog Years Calculator
The old rule that one dog year equals seven human years is simple but wrong. Dogs mature very quickly in their first two years and then age at a rate that depends heavily on size: small breeds often live past 15 while giant breeds are seniors by 7. This calculator uses the guideline popularised by the American Veterinary Medical Association: the first year of a dog's life is worth about 15 human years, the second adds about 9, and every year after that adds 4 to 7 depending on adult size.
For comparison it also shows the epigenetic formula published by University of California researchers in 2020, human age = 16 × ln(dog age) + 31, derived from DNA methylation patterns in Labrador retrievers. It captures how fast puppies mature (a one-year-old dog is biologically similar to a 31-year-old human) and how ageing slows later on.
