About the Data Storage Converter

Digital storage has two parallel unit systems and that is why a "1 TB" drive shows up as 931 GB in your operating system. Drive manufacturers use decimal units where a terabyte is 1,000,000,000,000 bytes, while Windows reports binary units where a tebibyte is 1,099,511,627,776 bytes but is still labelled TB. This converter keeps both families separate and correctly named, so you can see exactly where the missing 7 percent went.

It is equally useful for bandwidth and file-size planning: working out how many photos fit on a memory card, converting a video bitrate quoted in megabits into megabytes per minute, or checking whether an upload limit expressed in MiB will accept your file. Remember that network speeds are usually quoted in bits per second while file sizes are in bytes, a factor of eight.

Why does my 1 TB drive show as 931 GB?

The manufacturer sells 1,000,000,000,000 bytes, which is one decimal terabyte. Your operating system divides by 1024 three times and reports 931 gibibytes, but labels them GB. No storage is actually missing.

What is the difference between MB and MiB?

A megabyte (MB) is 1,000,000 bytes; a mebibyte (MiB) is 1,048,576 bytes, about 4.9 percent more. The IEC introduced the binary names in 1998 to remove the ambiguity.

How many bits are in a byte?

Eight. That is why a 100 Mbps connection downloads at a maximum of about 12.5 MB per second before protocol overhead.

How much video fits in a gigabyte?

Roughly 30 minutes of 1080p streaming video at 4.5 Mbps, or about 8 minutes of 4K at 15 Mbps. Convert the bitrate to bytes per second and divide the file size by it for an exact figure.
