About the Tip Calculator

The Tip Calculator takes the awkward math out of the end of a meal. Enter the bill, slide to the tip percentage you want to leave, and see the tip, the total and how much each person owes when the bill is split evenly. Rounding options let you land on a neat total or a neat per-person amount so nobody is hunting for coins.

Tipping customs vary by country. In the United States 15-20% is standard for table service and 20% or more for excellent service; in Canada 15-20% is typical; in the UK 10-15% is common if service is not already included; and in many parts of Asia and Europe tipping is optional or included as a service charge. When in doubt, check whether "service" already appears on the bill.

How to use the Tip Calculator

  1. Enter the bill amount before tip.
  2. Drag the slider to the tip percentage you want to leave and enter how many people are splitting.
  3. Optionally round the total or each share up, then read the tip, total and per-person amounts.

Frequently asked questions

Should I tip on the pre-tax or post-tax amount?

Etiquette guides generally say the pre-tax subtotal is fine, but many people tip on the full amount for simplicity. The difference is small; enter whichever figure you prefer as the bill.

How much should I tip in the USA?

15% is the minimum for adequate service, 18-20% is standard, and 20%+ rewards excellent service. For large groups a service charge of 18-20% is often added automatically.

What if a service charge is already included?

Then an additional tip is optional. Some people add a small amount for outstanding service, but you are not expected to tip twice.

How does "round each share up" work?

The per-person amount is rounded up to the next whole unit and the tip is adjusted so the total matches. It makes settling up with cash much easier.
